COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Before the opening pitch in the baseball season opener game between the USC Gamecocks and the Liberty Flames Friday, an intersection near Carolina Stadium donned a new name, Tanner Way, in honor of Ray Tanner.

The accolades for USC head baseball coach turned Athletics Director, Ray Tanner, are as many as his achievements. The new A.D.'s16-year coaching career at Carolina was highlighted before the first pitch was thrown during the Gamecocks season opener against Liberty.

School mascot, Cocky, led part of the pre-game celebration by unveiling Tanner Way, the corner of Wheat and Williams Streets downtown Columbia. However, Tanner, joined by his wife and three children on the field, took none of the praise. Instead, he gave it to the fans.

"You have taken an outstanding program to another level. Thank you for being the greatest Gamecocks of all time."

Also unveiled, was a state license tag honoring the Gamecock baseball team's back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011. The tags will be available for purchase from the South Carolina
Department of Motor Vehicles beginning Tuesday, February 19th.
Proceeds from the purchase of those license tags will go toward academic scholarships at the university.
