COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Wednesday, ABC Columbia got a behind the scenes look at a training exercise involving South Carolina Troopers.

"We want to go in and catch that threat immediately," says Captain Art Felder, South Carolina Highway Patrol

The scenario involves an active shooter, similar to the incident at Coastal Carolina University just this week.

"Coastal for instance, there's probably a trooper within three or four miles of that campus. In that situation they're gonna call," says Felder

Their goal, get innocent people out alive and catch the gunman.

"I can tell that everybody's uptight and scared about the situation that happened last night," says Jenna Horne, Senior at CCU.

Horne joined ABC Columbia News by phone Wednesday.

"It was hard to believe. I've been here for 4 years and never thought that something like this could happen," says Horne.

Horne says the school sent out three separate alerts, students received the following warning around 8:15 Tuesday night.

"Notifying everybody that Coastal Carolina was on a lockdown, there had been a shooting and to stay where you are with the doors locked," says Horne.

Students on campus at the time were told to stay there.

Horne says another alert was sent around 8:30 p.m. with the following warning.

"The suspect was still at large and to keep your doors locked," says Horne

She says the final alert notifying students that it was safe to leave campus went out around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Horne says while she never expected something like this to happen, she credits the university and law enforcement for keeping students safe.

The very goal of Wednesday's exercise with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

"We know from the mindset of an active shooter, their goal is to go in and kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Law enforcement, our goal is to go in and stop them," says Felder

Wednesday's class was the tenth of about thirty-eight planned classes. Over 700 officers are expected to go through the training.
