Clemson President Barker Having Heart Surgery
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson University President Jim Barker is having emergency heart surgery.
Barker is having triple bypass surgery Friday at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He said in an email to the university's community Thursday night that a heart catheterization showed blockages. Barker says he expects to be in the hospital for about a week and will likely need to go on medical leave when he's released. During his absence, Provost Dori Helms is taking over the president's duties. Clemson's board of trustees is meeting by telephone Friday to discuss a resolution, but officials have not given more details. Barker graduated from Clemson in 1970 and was selected as president in 1999. |

Why a week???? Most patients undergoing triple bypass surgery do NOT get a week's stay in the hospital.
