Residents React to Bessinger Death

By Rochelle Dean

Some had heard the news, others arriving at Maurice's Piggy Park Bar-B-Que for dinner just learning about Bessinger's passing. Either way residents say it's information that's tough to swallow.

Many of the residents we spoke with say they've been longtime customers, either stopping at one of several locations throughout the state as they drove through, or coming back for the atmosphere they'd grown accustomed to over the last 50 years.

Even though Bessinger had fought his share of battles, including his controversial decision to fly the confederate flag outside his restaurants, It was a bout with Alzheimers that forced him to step back from the bar-b-que business.

Customers say Bessigner was a icon in the community who will be missed.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been determined.
