Taxpayers Prepare Now, Despite IRS Filing Delay
Local CPA urges three imnportant steps to take now
IRMO, S.C. (WOLO) -- As the IRS delays when it will process your 2012 tax returns, ABC Columbia News spoke to a local tax preparer to explain what the changes mean for you as you prepare to file.
"Documentation, protecting your identity and getting with a good tax preparer as soon as possible."
Those are the three things Irmo CPA Yvette Jones urges South Carolina taxpayers to do now, especially in the midst of the Internal Revenue Service delaying when it will accept your 2012 tax information.
"They have to update the systems at the IRS and all tax software, so they can receive all forms."
They say that will be January 30, but Jones advises, don't wait until then.
"The good news is they did extend it to January 30. The bad news is, it's for about 80% of people. That other 20% may have to wait until the end of February, beginning of March."
As confusing as it all may sound, there is one glimmer of hope for those of us whose personal tax information was compromised when the South Carolina Department of Revenue was hacked last year.
"Those are two separate issue unrelated to the IRS and it does not affect our procedures to file taxes."
