Atheist Billboards Hit Columbia, Strike a NerveAdvertisements on display during the Holidays
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- The words: "Don't believe in God? You are not alone." are ruffling the feathers of many in the Midlands, while the organization responsible says it's the perfect advertisement campaign for its cause.
The Columbia Coalition of Reason, a combination of four atheist and non-theist groups in the Midlands, launched the public awareness campaign this week. Two 14x48 digital billboards, one at Blossom and Pulaski Streets, and the other at I-20 east of Monticello Road, were put on display, officials say, to attract new members. They say atheists, agnostics, and non-theists often are unaware of resources available to them, as they are surrounded by residents who live in the 'bible belt' of the South. Members say they want to be a resource for those who feel as though they don't belong. The billboards will remain on display until next month. They will be taken down approximately four days before Christmas. That's because officials with the Columbia Coalition of Reason say, they 'want to offend as few people as possible.' I was born a northerner and will always be proud to be a northerner. Even though I now live in SC near the state capital. I have seen the bill board mentioned in the news report. Ignorance is golden I always say. I am a believer in God and his son. But unlike some of the people that support the christian life style they do not rule the world. there are many other religions in the world. Christian isn’t the only one in assistance. Though according to christians it is. Most of you seriously need to read more than the bible. Read about our world history. Read about religious history from the beginning of time. Then maybe your eyes will open to more than what you believe to be the only truth there is. I see nothing wrong with the bill boards. This is a FREE COUNTRY please don’t question anyone’s freedom because you don’t like what someone has to say. Me Myself and I . . .

This campaign is a beacon of hope for the skeptics living in a cesspool of ignorance. I can't believe they're only up for a month.

@hootie46 To let other non-theists know that they aren't alone and that there are like-minded groups they can meet up and discuss the topic with. @HOOTIE1946 Well then there's no need for you to get so worked up.

What's so offensive about this? I've seen far more offensive Christian billboards. I love the hystericalk responses from some of the believers to this. And, as an aside, what is it with some Christians and their love of capitals and exclamation marks? Calm down, folks, you're not making yourselves appear any more sane by posting in all caps . . .

Awesome campaign! Well stated by the coalition representative as well. We exist. We're growing. We formulate the background of scientific America, which will become more and more important with each passing day.

How is that offensive? There are people that don't believe in gods. In fact, as no religion has a majority of followers, whatever religious beliefs you may have, the majority of the people on the planet think you are wrong. That is a simple fact. How insecure in your own beliefs do you have to be for the mere existence of people with different beliefs to be "offensive"?

What is so offensive about not believing in gods? Why do some people get so bothered over atheists, who merely believe in one less god than they do?

And the purpose of the organization is???? To show their ignorance??

i find it somewhat absurd that this could offend someone. it's not like they're saying 'there is no god' they're simply trying to outreach to people that may feel somewhat on the fringe of conservative society. if you're ofended by the idea that people might not believe in the christian god you need to take some time to reevaluate your world view.
