Columbia Animal Shelter to Become No-Kill?

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Inside the "buddy room," at the Columbia Animal Shelter, you will find several furry four-legged friends waiting for a home.

"The long term answer to this is spay-neuter, spay-neuter, spay-neuter," says Marli Drum, Executive Director of the Columbia Animal Shelter.

Adoptions are what workers at the shelter say they want to see and they have throught help they credit to partners like the Animal Mission and Pawmetto Lifeline. But sadly, some animals still die at the shelter.

However, there is progress.

Since the fiscal year of 2008-2009 euthanizations have dropped from 10,941 to 8,533.

Still, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin wants to do more. he wants to make the shelter a 'no kill' shelter.

"It's not just a shelter problem, it's not just a rescue group's problem, it's a community problem and that means our citizens have to get on board with this," says Drum.

We met several of the animals currently up for adoption Wednesday, including Cali, who could be the latest star in a new program at the shelter "The Pet of the Week."

"The idea is to showcase one of our adoption animals," says Drum.

Petie was the first pet to be featured in the program and he already has a new home.

"They can't wait to take him on his first trip to the beach we're told," says Drum.

But there are so many others here, like Cali, who need a home.

Cali came to the shelter after workers says her owners left her before going on a trip.

Over a year later, she's still here along with many others.

Crandall Sims reporting, "As you can tell, some are more vocal than others... but all of these dogs in this room are here waiting for someone like you to give them a forever home."

In the meantime, workers say they will continue to try and find all of the animals at the shelter a home.

Careful what you wish for, LA also wished for No Kill and it destroyed the shelters. Check into Philly and how No Kill destroyed that shelter to the point the contract was literally ripped from the hand picked management staff of the founder of No Kill. That shelter was on the verge of having cruelty charges filed. Better do some research and you'll find when you do, that it ain't what you think. Stop No Kill before it ruins your shelter.
