Columbia Police: Caregiver Slammed Toddler's Head against Faucet
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)--- Columbia Police have charged a 34 year old woman with Homicide by Child Abuse in connection with the death of a two year old.
"This was an act that, in my opinion, is unexplainable and certainly doesn't have an excuse," says Gary Watts, Richland County Coroner
Friday, March 17th, bathtime -- a simple part of a nightly routine --turned deadly for a two year old little boy.
"We're talking about kids, that you see playing and laughing," says Ruben Santiago, Interim Police Chief for the Columbia Police Department.
According to an arrest warrant 34 year old Margie Hamm, admitted to slamming the child's head into a faucet then observing his declining health, placing him in bed and failing to seek medical care.
But, moments after the blow Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says the child's health had already started to fail.
"Within an hour he was in a coma," says Gary Watts
Hamm, according to authorities, is the live-in girlfriend of Jayon's father Terry Jenkins.
She was caring for the children while police say Jenkins was working the late shift.
Two other children, ages 2 and 4 and biological children of Hamm, were also reportedly in the bath tub at the time of the incident.
Crandall Sims reporting, "We're told the incident happened at this home behind me on Lester Drive on Friday night. But, EMS wasn't called until Saturday morning when the child's father found him unresponsive."
By then it was too late, the child was later pronounced dead.
So far Hamm's frustration is the only reason police can give for this crime.
Hamm is being held in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
