Columbia's Top Cop is Stepping Down

By Rochelle Dean

It was an emotional news conference, Chief Randy Scott chose to hold in order to announce to the public why he made the decision to step away from the job he says he still loves.

A tearful Scott says he's suffering from PTSD, also known as post traumatic stress disorder. A condition he says he developed because of the stress associated with his profession.

More specifically, the loss of a friend and fellow officer he hired while working in the Richland County Sheriff's Department, killed in a crash has haunted him for years.

As the former Marine turned Police Chief worked to make a successful drop in crime throughout the city - but while he spent endless hours doing that, he realized he was neglecting his family.

Trying to keep the focus off himself and back on the Men and Women of the Columbia Police Department, Chief Scott says the best way for them to be able to continue doing the great work they've accomplished thus far, was to inform the public so the department can get back to the business of fighting crime. Before leaving the podium, Chief Scott had one request.

"every time you see a person in public safety, don't discredit them, don't take it for granted. They are literally sacrificing their families. More importantly, They're sacrificing themselves."

Chief Scott says he's currently getting treatment for his condition.

Active Police Chief, Ruben Santiago will serve as interim Police Chief until a permanent replacement is been named.

The search for that hire will begin May 1st, The Chief's official last day with the Department.
