Deputy: "He was always with me."
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "It's been horrible, it's like a member of my family," says Deputy Roger Singleton, South Congaree Police Department.
For Deputy Singleton the past couple of days have been tough. Thursday, his partner K9 Enzo lost his battle with cancer.
At nine yeras old Enzo was, to the department, one of a kind.
"When we would stop a car, he would get so excited, in the back of car, a lot of times dispatch couldn't even hear me on the radio. He was back there making so much noise jumping around thinking that he was going to get to go to work," says Deputy Singleton.
Despite the cancer diagnosis, just months ago, Enzo refused to let it stop him from doing what he loved.
"He still wanted to work, when I went to take him tot he vet yesterday afternoon, he went straight to the car. He thought we were going to work," says Deputy Singleton.
Enzo's most recent bust was just this week. But, his work went beyond the department. He inspired South Congaree residents of all ages including 10 year old Madison Burrows.
"He was special to me, he was the first dog I vested," says Madison Burrows.
We first met both Madison and Enzo last March after Madison started the "Friends of Fargo" project, an effort to give protective vests to every K9 in South Carolina.
Enzo was the first vest recipient.
Friday, we caught up with Madison who says she is sad, but she knows where Enzo is today.
"He's at Rainbow Bridge playing with Fargo waiting for Mr. Roger to come and get him," says Burrows.
And Roger is here trying to figure out the future without his beloved Enzo.
"He was always there, he was always with me. He was either in the patrol car with me or in my pick up truck with me," says Singleton
A memorial service will be held for Enzo Monday at the Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church, 501 Church Street, South Congaree.
A fund has also been set up in his name at First Citizens Bank to purchase a new K9 for the South Congaree Police Department.
