(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., --

A Sled investigation into alleged corruption and charges against the South Carolina NAACP president have some citizens wondering how transparent and equal the government is in the city of Columbia.

Mayor Steve Benjamin who is running for re-election says he is hoping to help change that view by demanding the firing and prosecution of anyone within the police department found guilty of corruption in the police department. The current Mayor says he would also like to have a system that gives the Mayor more control to change some of the issues currently being raised by some of the cities constituents.

"that is up to the people, they have to vote for a new form of Government. But i think we all unanimously agree that the decision has to be the voters."

The man hoping to be the new Mayor of Columbia, Former FBI Agent Larry Sypolt says there are several things that need to change in the current system, the first of them is trust.
Sypolt says he feels the city needs a new police chief immediately and is strongly urging for a candidate who is local.

Sypolt says merging Richland County and Columbia police during a 5 year trial period would also help expand law enforcements access to some of the best crime lab tools in the area. A move he says will additionally make the citizens of Columbia feel safer.

" it's about getting the city of Columbia out from under the Government they're having to work under now so they can make better decisions ...Columbia needs new leadership now."

We reached out to third Mayoral candidate Moe Baddurah for comment but our calls were not returned.
