McBride Resigns from County Election Commission
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "I shall relinquish my duties and responsibilities and leave my current position as Executive Director, effective January 12, 2013," reads Allen Dowdy of the Richland County Board of Elections and Voter Registration, while reading the resignation letter of Lillian McBride.
And with that, embattled now-former Executive Director of the Richland County Election Commission, Lillian McBride stepped down.
McBride's attorney handed in her letter of resignation to the Richland County Board of Elections and Voter Registration, Thursday afternoon.
Moments later the board went into Executive Session.
When board members returned, acting Chairperson Allen Dowdy read the letter.
"I accept fully the responsibility for what occurred during the Election on November 6, 2012," reads Dowdy, of McBride's resignation letter.
McBride sat listening to the letter, that board members say, she handed in on her own will.
"In the will to implement improvement and to overcome the difficulties we encountered on November 6th. I believe my action today is an important step in that direction," reads Dowdy, of McBride's
McBride's resignation came on the heels of weeks of back-and-forth over whether she actually resigned. According to Representative Todd Rutherford, McBride resigned weeks ago.
However, McBride later released a statement saying she did not resign and any talk of that was premature and erroneous.
But Thursday, it was made official and the board voted to accept her resignation.
While her days at the helm are now over, McBride isn't completely out of a job.
The board also voted to keep her on staff working with Voter Registration. That exact position is not known.
Meanwhile, board members also declared Jasper Salmond as acting Executive Director.
