SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) _ Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright helped his deputies chase down an armed robbery suspect.

The sheriff says Christopher Webb sped through stop signs and red lights Wednesday in a chase through Spartanburg neighborhoods that reached up to 100 mph. Wright says Webb tried to ram the sheriff's car.

Deputies say Webb was able to get away from officers during the chase, but was arrested at a motel several hours later.

Investigators say Webb has been charged with robbery and the investigation is continuing.

Wright told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg that officers could have been justified shooting Webb during the chase because he was putting lives at risk and he should be thankful they were professional.

Webb remains in jail. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
