Students Repair Local Family Home

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "It's a good opportunity to give back to the community and just help others that are in need," says Otto Ntetani, Ben Lippen student volunteer.

Monday students from Ben Lippen brought hope and hard work to a local door step.

The home belonged to a mother, daughter and granddaughter in need.

The daughter, known as Mrs. Grate, is the care giver for her mother and 3 year old child.

Outside the home more than a dozen students, some doing work they've never done before.

"In some instances may not even know one end of a hammer from another, but htey come out here and they're going to learn that what they are doing is signficant," says Hank Chardos of Home Works.

The project is all part of Home Works, a local effort to help those in need.

This particular home needs roof repairs, floor repairs and wheelchair ramps installed.

While Mrs. Grate did not want to go on camera, ABC Columbia News learned from Home Works, that at 37 years old, she is wheel chair bound after suffering spinal injuries.

The wheel chair ramp installed at her home Monday, means easier access to her home.

And for all involved, a new perspective.

"They see sometimes how fortunate they are," says Darryl Williams, Volunteer.

"Now the next time it rains, Mrs. Grate doesn't have to worry about watching the rain," says Chardos.

The group will continue working on the home through Wednesday.
