Local Martin Rally Has National Focus

Columbia joins 100 other cities for demonstration

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- After learning juror in the George Zimmerman trial were originally split before the final not guilty verdict was rendered, folks int he community says it's important now more than ever to come together to encourage federal authorities to seek additional charges against Zimmerman.

The Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse is one of the major stops along the route planned for a march and rally this Saturday in honor of Travyon Martin, making Columbia one of at least 100 cities to participate simultaneously, nationwide.

The event is in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. With additional state charges against Zimmerman now a mute point, the focus shifts to federal authorities and what their options may be in pursuing Zimmerman. A nationwide non-violent demonstration at federal courthouses is an attempt to show support of seeking more charges in the case.

Those participating in the march, similar to the one that took place last year right when the story first broke, are encouraged to wear hoodies to pay homage to the slain teen.

Details are as follows:

The rally will begin 10:00am at the State House. After the rally, there will be a march from the State House to the Matthew J. Perry Federal Court House to join the nation in the “Justice for Trayvon 100 City Vigil." Organizers say the non-violent demonstration is a way to exercise their constitutional rights, sign a petition to call on the Department of Justice to act, show their support to the Martin’s family, help collect school supplies, as well as feed the homeless.

School supplies and can food items will be welcomed as a show of solidarity.

Will there be any voter registration booths there? You know, we need this to vote and to sit on the jury!

Peaceful assembly is good... Just keep the rhetoric to a low pitch and leave the signs at home!
