By News Department

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) - A 1st Army Sergeant, who worked on Shaw Air Force Base, is dead after a tractor trailer logger truck slammed into the driver's side of his pickup truck at a Sumter County intersection.

That's according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The accident happened around 1:15pm on US 76 at St Paul Church Road.

The coroner identified the victim as 40-year-old Bryant Riley. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Troopers say the driver of the tractor trailer disregarded a stoplight.

The crash remains under investigation.

You're writing about the death of a soldier - the least you can do is write a decent article. What day did it happen? Was he an Army first sergeant, or a sergeant in the 1st Army division? Did you consult a style guide? There's a section on how to write military titles. What unit is he from? Also, if he was a first sergeant, you would still include rank with name (i.e. "...40-year-old 1st Sgt. Bryant Riley."). Unclutter your lead. 1:15 p.m. on what day? Attribute a written source with according to and a spoken source with said so and so. "...Sumter County intersection, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol." If he were one of my soldiers, I would be beside myself that this was the best article you could do for a dead soldier. As it is, I'm severely irked to have read this.
