Suspect Dead after Shootout with Deputies

By News Department

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) - An armed robbery at a Richland County convenience store ultimately leads to a shootout with deputies.

That's according to Sheriff Leon Lott.

He say the incident started Wednesday with the report of a stolen truck near the Kennerly Road area. That vehicle supposedly had a gun inside. It's not know at this time if that weapon was used during Thursday night's shootout.

The suspect is accused of robbing a convenience store, Sam's Food Mart. A high speed chase then ensued, and the suspect's vehicle wrecked along Broad River Road in front of Fatz Cafe.

Sheriff Lott says the suspect fired shots at his responding deputies. He adds they returned fire, killing the suspect.

A ricocheted bullet hit one deputy's boot but did not injure him. Sheriff Lott says it just left a mark.

Sheriff Lott says his deputies are receiving counseling because they were fired at close range.

Investigators are collecting evidence at the scene.

The suspect's identity has not been released.

Sheriff Lott is expected to hold another news conference Friday to update the situation.
