Grant Found Guilty, Swainson's Father Speaks

Grant to be sentenced in April

By Monique Williams

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- It took a jury about two and a half hours to find Freddie Grant guilty on a federal ammunition charge. That means, they believe Grant was knowingly and intentionally in possession of ammunition, which is against the law for anyone already convicted of a felony.

Freddie Grant's daughter, Dominique, admitted she is the one who transported boxes of ammunition to her father's house for her own use. But, it was not enough to convince a jury he didn't know it was there.

"The question is how long that ammo was in the house, did Freddie know it was there, did he move it, all these were questions no one had the answers to," said Grant's attorney, John Delgado.

Grant, a convicted felon prior to when his Elgin residence was searched in August, by law, cannot possess ammunition. A jury handed down the verdict after two and a half hours of deliberation.

"In felony possession case there's a max of 10 years, but if you're an armed career criminal, meaning you have prior felonies, drug charges, etc., then Congress says you need an enhanced penalty, which ups it to 15 years to life," said federal prosecutor, Stacey Haynes.

Grant's older brother, Johnny, thinks the defense should have done more to convince the jury his brother wasn't actually living at the Elgin residence, and therefore, didn't know the ammo was there.

"I'm not satisfied with the outcome, not happy with the verdict."

However, Alvin Thompson, father of missing Midlands teen Gabbiee Swainson, who local police suspect was abducted by Freddie Grant, is happy with the verdict.

"I'm pleased with the verdict, but at the same time, I'm thinking about my daughter."

Freddie Grant remains in jail. He is expected to be sentenced April 18th.

It is my opinion that there is something "fishy" about this whole sordid affair. I believe media/sheriff have sensationalized this story to keep it in the news.
