Port Royal Rejects Jellyfish Operation
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) _ Port Royal has decided on an alternative to a jellyfish operation at the town docks.
The Beaufort Gazette reports that while the town worked with a businessman on the jellyfish plan for months, it was not part of the $5 million budget approved Wednesday.
Instead, local shrimpers will continue to use the docks. The town is adding money for equipment and a dock manager.
The council had been talking to the businessman about the jellyfish operation but council cooled to the idea when details of past bankruptcies emerged. The town wanted proof of insurance and a performance bond that would pay the town if the company did not meet its obligations.
Millenarian Trading Co. had proposed creating as many as 250 jobs by processing jellyfish for Asian seafood markets.
