(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C.,--

A bronze statue erected to honor those who have lost their battle with or continue living with Cancer was stolen from Maxcy Gregg Park last Spring.

Authorities had no idea what happened to the female bronze statue valued at 5 thousand dollars. All that was left behind was a portion of the monuments foot, still anchored to the ground at the memorial site.

Monday Morning, Richland county deputies were patrolling an area near Childs and Barnes streets in Lower Richland county, when the deputy noticed the statue hidden near a heavily wooded area. Captain Chirs Cowen says the officer knew what it was immediatey and contact Columbia police so they could recover the item.

So far, officials tell us they have no idea how long the piece has been there, how it was transported or why. But according to a incident report obtained by ABC Columbia News, we do know whoever is responsible could face grand larceny charges.

The statue which was not damaged has been returned to The Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation. We attempted to contact them to find out when and if the statue would be replaced and if they planned on any new safety measure to keep the theft from happening again.

Ours calls were no returned.

Authorities are asking anyone who has information about the incident to contact crimestoppers at 1800-CRIME-SC where they can remain anonymous.
