Univ. of South Carolina announces Commencement Speakers

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) (USC)-- The former U.S. secretary of defense, the home-grown lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish and the former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom are among the speakers for the May 2013 commencement ceremonies at the University of South Carolina.

Robert Gates, chancellor of the College of William and Mary, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and secretary of defense appointed by President George W. Bush, will address graduates at the Friday, May 10, commencement exercises.

The 3 p.m. ceremony in the Colonial Life Arena will include students from the Darla Moore School of Business, College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, College of Nursing, South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Arnold School of Public Health. Gates will receive an honorary degree of doctor of public service.

On Saturday, May 11, Darius Rucker, a country music artist who rocketed to fame as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist with the rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, will speak at the 9:30 a.m. commencement ceremony.
Rucker will address graduates of the South Carolina Honors College and the College of Arts and Sciences. Rucker, who formed Hootie and the Blowfish with three fellow USC students in 1986, will receive a doctor of music honorary degree.


At 3 p.m. Saturday, Philip Lader, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and chairman of the world’s largest communications services group, will address graduates of the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, the Fort Jackson Military Base Program, Interdisciplinary Programs, Palmetto Programs, the School of Music and the College of Social Work.
Lader, the former president of Winthrop University, is a partner in the Charleston offices of the Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough law firm and chairman of the communications services firm WPP Group.
