Weather a Problem for Holiday Travel

State Highway Patrol offer highway safety tips

By Monique Williams

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Weather forecasters say driving conditions could be treacherous before, during and after Christmas, bringing rain and heavy wind. State troopers say that could pose real problems for your holiday travel.

The one third of all Americans expected to travel for the holidays will experience unforgiving road conditions of some kind. As Lisa Kelly gasses up to travel 100 miles throughout South Carolina, she's prepared.

"I try to watch the person in front of me and see what everyone else is doing. Defensive driving is important," said Kelly.

As wife of Lance Corporal Brent Kelly with the south Carolina Highway Patrol, she has to use her best roadside manner. He advises you do the same, beginning with watching out for standing water.

"Don't pick up speed when roads are wet like this because it becomes very easy for the car to hydroplane, lose control, and run off the road," said Cpl. Kelly.

Cpl. Kelly also warns not to engage in road rage.

"If someone comes up beside you, slow down, get out of their way, let them go and call us to let us know a vehicle is driving in a wreckless manner."

Finally, he advises, leave for your destination early and make sure to allow a minimum of three seconds between you and the car in front of you.

"That gives you enough time to react in case that vehicle has to slam on brakes for some reason. Following too close causes secondary collisions, more problems and more traffic delays."

Law enforcement's Sober or Slammer campaign is also in full effect until after the New Year. In the meantime, if you see suspicious activity on the highway dial *HP to alert authorities.
