Woman Charged in Coach's Hit-and-Run Death

CADES, S.C. (AP) _ Authorities have charged a woman with reckless homicide in the death of Kingstree High School's women's basketball coach.

Troopers say Daveline Holmes struck 39-year-old Sonya Burgess as she stood outside her SUV after it crashed Monday evening when she tried to avoid a car that turned in her path.

At a bond hearing Wednesday, Holmes' attorney says she was driving to see her child play basketball and had no idea she hit someone. The lawyer says Holmes didn't know about Burgess' death until she called authorities.

Burgess' players decided to play Tuesday night, advancing to the Class 2A Lower State championship with a 57-44 win over Lake City. Kingstree will play Bishop England, with the winner advancing to the state championship game.
