SC State Guard has change of command ceremony
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom is now also the head of the South Carolina State Guard.
Eckstrom was officially made the interim commander of the State Guard during a ceremony Saturday during which Maj. Gen. Nelson C. Lacy retired after four and a half years as head of the State Guard.
Eckstrom retired from the Navy Reserve in 1995 as a captain. He holds the rank of brigadier general in the State Guard.
State Guard spokesman Scott Malyerck said in a news release that the State Guard took on an increased role in homeland security and emergency preparedness and improved training during Lacy's tenure.
The State Guard operates under the adjutant general's office and works in conjunction with the South Carolina National Guard and the Emergency Management Division.
