Prosecutors convict South Carolina drug kingpin

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say they have won a conviction against the last of 14 defendants who ran a large-scale drug ring in Allendale, Hampton and Barnwell counties.

Authorities said 31-year-old Earl Daniels was found guilty Tuesday of conspiracy to distribute narcotics. Prosecutors say he faces a mandatory life sentence.

Investigators say Daniels worked with 13 co-defendants who started bringing drugs into the area in 2005. They also said Daniels helped convert powder cocaine into crack and had a network of dealers.

Authorities say Daniels himself handled at least 33 pounds of drugs worth more than $500,000.

The 13 others charged in the drug ring pleaded guilty and also are awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors say they face sentences ranging from five years in prison to life.
