1-On-1 With Frank Martin
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Going 1-on-1 with Frank Martin off the court is a lot less intense than what we have seen from the former Kansas St. basketball coach on the court.
Wednesday afternoon, the new USC Head Basketball coach sat down with local media members for 1-on-1 interviews. One week and one day into his new job, Martin said his knowledge of his new hometown is limited to knowing where to stop to get coffee on his way from his Columbia apartment to the Gamecock basketball offices.
Martin, who is still in the process of sorting out which current USC basketball players will be staying with the team, is busy looking for future Gamecocks elsewhere. "April's a hectic month in recruiting," Martin said, "And a very important month in recruiting. Between the Final Four, the first couple days on the job, and now recruiting in front of us, it's going to be hard for me to know my way around the community probably until the month of May, but I'm excited as can be."
Martin will try to make South Carolina basketball nationally relevant after three straight losing seasons, no NCAA tournament appearances since 2004, and no NCAA tournament wins since 1973.
Martin took four of his five Kansas St. teams to the Big Dance and never lost in the first round of the tournament.
He recently agreed to a 6-year, $12 million deal at USC to replace Darrin Horn.
