Savitz Clinches 14th State Title At Irmo

By Sports Department

COLUMBIA (WOLO) -- Irmo head soccer coach Phil Savitz clinched his 14th state title with Irmo Saturday in the 4A State Soccer Championship at Gilbert High School.

After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, Irmo won on Mattison Gossett's penalty kick that was blocked by Lexington's goalkeeper Jacob Parton, but took an awkward bounce and rolled in the goal.

The 4-3 penalty kick victory was the Yellow Jackets' 16th state soccer championship and the 14th of Savitz's career at Irmo.

The game ends Savitz's 33-year career at Irmo.

He will take over the soccer program at the new River Bluff High School next season.
