Lexington Opens Title Series With 5-2 Win
Lexington, S.C. (LHS) -- Lefty Josh Reagan pitched a four-hitter and Brandon Camp and Ryan Brown added two hits each that helped top-ranked Lexington to a 5-2 win over 3rd-ranked Blythewood in the opening game of the AAAA best-of-three high school baseball state championship series before a capacity crowd at Wildcats Field on Monday.
Lexington, which grabbed a 1-0 in the series, improved to 27-4 and can clinch its first state title since 1999 when it plays at Blythewood at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bengals fell to 26-6.
After the Bengals scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, Lexington tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Brown singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Addy. After Nick Ciuffo was intentionally walked, Zach Paquette singled to left field scoring Brown to tie the game at 1-all.
Lexington used a hit and four Blythewood errors to score twice in the bottom of the second inning. Brown and Jordan Buster scored on a two-out throwing error to give the Wildcats the lead for good at 3-1.
Lexington's Cody Smith walked leading off the bottom of the fourth inning and scored when Brown lined a triple to right center. Ciuffo's RBI single to right scored Brown and gave the Wildcats a 5-1 advantage.
D.J. Schofield had an RBI double in the fifth inning for Blythewood for the final margin.
Reagan (10-0) picked up the win tossing his fifth complete game of the season. He allowed two runs, one earned, with a walk and six strikeouts. Andrew Beckwith (7-2) suffered the loss surrendering five runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings. Beckwith walked five and struck out eight.
Brown and Camp finished 2-for-3, while Ciuffo went 1-for-2 with a pair of intentional walks to pace Lexington.
