(WOLO) -- Irmo native Dustin Johnson is still in search of that elusive first major golf championship.

The Dutch Fork High School alum shot a final round even par 72 at the 143rd British Open to finish 9-under and in a tie for 12th place.

Rory McIlroy shot a final round 71 to finish 17-under and win by 2 shots over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia.

The 25-year-old Irishman McIlroy becomes the third youngest golfer to win three out of the four major tournaments. Jack Nicklaus did it at age 23. Tiger Woods was 24.

McIlroy also becomes just the 7th wire-to-wire British Open champion.
