Ripken To Transfer From USC

By Sports Department

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Ryan Ripken, the son of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., is leaving the USC baseball program without ever playing an official game as a Gamecock.

According to a source with knowledge, Ripken will transfer from Carolina. The first baseman did not make the 35-man roster and did not play at all for USC in his freshman season.

Senior LB Dantzler played most of the year at first base for the Gamecocks. Even with the All-American moving on, playing time at that position would have been tough to come by for Ripken.

Sophomore Kyle Martin played first base for USC during the postseason and won regional MVP honors.

Designated hitter and first baseman Brison Celek is planning on returning to the Carolina program for a redshirt senior season. Celek had originally planned on turning pro but had an issue passing a physical with the Toronto Blue Jays.
