COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO ) -- The Houston Texans selected South Carolina safety D.J. Swearinger with the No. 57 overall pick in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

In his senior season with the Gamecocks, Swearinger had 80 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups.

He had 80 tackles, three interceptions and three pass breakups as a junior.

“It’s pretty easy to watch a guy that strikes like he does, moves like he does, physical as he is,” Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said.

Phillips said Swearinger will play both safety spots.

The Texans took Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday.
