USC Football To Be Honored Saturday
COLUMBIA, S.C. (USC SID) -- The “Best Football Team in Carolina History” will be recognized at halftime of the South Carolina – Ole Miss men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 18. The game will tip at 4:30 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia and will be televised on FSN.
Head football coach Steve Spurrier and several players from the 2014 Capital One Bowl championship squad are expected to be on hand, with the Head Ball Coach slated to address the crowd. Fans attending the game will receive a souvenir card commemorating the Gamecocks’ third-consecutive 11-win season.
The Gamecocks finished the 2013 campaign with an 11-2 record and ranked fourth in both the Associated Press and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ polls. It marked the highest postseason ranking in school history. The Gamecocks posted three wins over teams that finished in the Top-10 (Missouri, Clemson and UCF), five wins over Top-25 squads (Missouri, Clemson, UCF, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt) and six wins over teams that won bowl games (Missouri, Clemson, UCF, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and North Carolina). The 2013 senior class posted the most wins (42) in a four-year period in school history. The season culminated with a 34-24 win over Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl.
Saturday’s game also culminates the “2014 Legends Weekend, Commemorating Frank McGuire.” The event begins on Friday evening with a street topping ceremony at Colonial Life Arena. On Saturday, the Carolina legends will be honored during pre-game festivities, including an autograph session starting at 3:15 p.m. on the arena concourse featuring those players from the McGuire era. Recognition of all Carolina legends will be held beginning at approximately 4 p.m., on the CLA court.
