South Carolina president praises new AD Tanner
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides says former Gamecocks baseball coach Ray Tanner's transition to his new job as athletic director has been seamless.
Pastides expected some bumps in the road when Tanner left the dugout last July after AD Eric Hyman left for a similar spot with Texas A&M. Instead, Tanner has proven to be a capable and forward-thinking during his first six months on the job.
The president told The Associated Press on Friday that Tanner was always a people person, skilled at fundraising and making connections. Tanner has been a fast-study with the business side and continuing the vast makeover of South Carolina's facilities begun in Hyman's seven years.
Pastides says Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has also given Tanner good early reviews as athletic director.
