COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Dawn Staley has signed the junior college player of the year in 5-foot-7 guard Olivia Gaines.

Gaines spent the past two seasons at Louisburg College in North Carolina. She averaged 18.6 points and six rebounds a game as Louisburg won the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division II championship. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association named Gaines player of the year for among junior college-community college players.

Gaines has two years of eligibility starting next fall. She joins South Carolina's other signee in Alaina Coates, a 6-4 center from Dutch Fork High School.

South Carolina went 25-8 and reached its second straight NCAA tournament. It set a school best for Southeastern Conference victories with 11 this past season.
