Benedict Basketball Beats Elizabeth City In OT
COLUMBIA, S.C. (BC SID) -- The Benedict College Tigers hit nine of 12 free throws in overtime to beat the Elizabeth City State Vikings 68-62 on Monday at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Elizabeth City's Angelo Sharpless hit a running jumper with six seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 55.
The Tigers got a pair of free throws from Xavier Collier to open the overtime period, and then Collier hit a jumper with 3:06 left for a 59-56 lead. Brennan Reynard hit two more free throws to put the Tigers ahead 61-56 with 2:43 remaining.
Collier missed a layup, but Tydran Beaty rebounded the missed shot and slammed it home for a 63-56 lead with 1:44 to play, and the Tigers were able to seal the victory at the free throw line.
Beaty led the Tigers, now 4-1 on the season, with 20 points and nine rebounds. Collier had 15 points and four assists, while Brennan Reynard added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Sharpless led the Vikings, now 5-2, with 33 points and 10 rebounds. Dominique Byrd was the only other Viking in double figures with 12 points.
The Tigers shot 42 percent for the game, but hit just 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from behind the arc. The Vikings shot just 32.8 percent for the game, including hitting just one field goal in seven tries (14.3 percent) in overtime.
The Tigers had a 29-23 lead at the half, but Sharpless got hot in the second half and scored nine straight points for the Vikings to give the visitors a 38-33 lead. Rickie Jackson hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two, Reynard hit a pair of free throws to tie the game, and a 3-pointer by Lynden Davis gave the Tigers a 41-38 lead with 12:10 to play. The game stayed tight the rest of the way.
Benedict is home against Brewton-Parker College, an NAIA school from Mount Vernon, Georgia, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
