Benedict Beats Rival Claflin 66-54
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (BC SID) -- The Benedict Tigers placed five players in double figures and the Tigers won their fourth straight game, defeating rival Claflin University 66-54 on Monday night.
Xavier Collier led the Tigers with 13 points, while Tydran Beaty and Rickie Jackson had 11 points each. Marcus Goode and Alex Brailsford chipped in with 10 points each.
Benedict improved to 14-6 overall and 10-2 in the SIAC. Claflin fell to 7-13 overall and 5-7 in the SIAC.
The Panthers opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, but a 13-0 Benedict run gave the Tigers a 23-15 lead with 8:35 left in the first half and Benedict led the rest of the way. Benedict had a 29-22 lead when the Tigers finished the first half with a 7-0 run to take a 36-22 lead at the break.
Benedict scored the first six points of the second half to take a 20-point lead, 42-22 on baskets by Goode, Collier and Brailsford. The Tigers held as much as a 21-point lead on two occasions before the Panthers trimmed the lead to the final 12 points, thanks to a Terrance Bowman before the buzzer. Bowman led the Panthers with 22 points.
Benedict will look to extend its winning streak when the Tigers travel to face Albany State on Thursday.
