Blowfish, USC Alumni Raise Money For Izzy

By Sports Department

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- July 3rd's seventh annual battle for the GameFish trophy will be more than just a game.  This year the Columbia Blowfish and USC alumni exhibition game will raise money for a good cause.

Blowfish president Bill Shanahan says his team is donating $1000 to help former Gamecock and major leaguer Landon Powell's family.

5-month-old Izzy Powell died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare condition that causes white blood cells to build up in organs such as the skin, spleen and liver, and destroys other blood cells.

Landon's wife Allyson told ESPN the cost of Izzy's medical care is in the millions.

E:60 recently profiled the story.

Fans at Wednesday's game at Capital City Stadium will be able to bid on several silent auction items that will be on display in the concourse including autographed items from former Gamecock greats Michael Roth, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Kip Bouknight among others.

Fans can also bid on the opportunity to coach first base for the USC Alumni team and to get a chance to take an at-bat for the Gamecock team in the exhibition game's final inning.
