COLUMBIA, S.C. (USC SID) -- University of South Carolina running back Mike Davis has been selected as one of 50 “players to watch” for the Walter Camp Foundation’s 2104 Player of the Year award, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.

Davis, a 5-9, 223-pound junior from Atlanta, rushed 203 times for 1,183 yards, the fourth-highest single season total in school history, with 11 touchdowns, while earning second-team All-SEC accolades a year ago. Earlier this summer he was named to Phil Steele's and Athlon's 2014 preseason third-team All-America squad. He is also on the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award preseason watch lists.

In all, 42 schools are represented on the list. There are 33 offensive players (16 quarterbacks, 8 receivers, 7 running backs, and 2 offensive linemen) and 17 from the defensive side of the ball (7 defensive backs, 5 defensive lineman, and 5 linebackers).

“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president James Monico said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 11. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 17, 2015 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.

Please note: Appearing on the preseason Watch List is not a requirement for a player to win the Walter Camp award or be named to the All-American team.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation (www.waltercamp.org; @WalterCampFF) – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
