Lattimore Targeting Week One Comeback

By Sports Department

(WOLO) -- Marcus Lattimore might be back on the football field sooner than we all thought.

Tuesday, the Gamecocks' all-time touchdown leader told Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples that Dr. James Andrews has called Lattimore's progress after knee surgery, "nothing short of a miracle."

The world-renowned Andrews surgically repaired three of Lattimore's four left knee ligaments after a gruesome season-ending knee injury in October against Tennessee. Originally the running back was not expected to return to football game-action until the 2014 season.

Lattimore told Staples Tuesday it is realistic for him to be back in week one of the 2013 season. Lattimore talked with Staples at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Two days after Lattimore's injury, Steve Spurrier told a gathering of USC fans that the running back planned to return to USC and possibly redshirt for the 2013 season and play his senior season in 2014.

Lattimore officially declared for the NFL draft on December 12th. He finished his three-year Gamecock career with 2,677 rushing yards and a school-record 38 rushing TDs.
