Former USC Standouts Now Minor League Teammates
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WOLO) -- Former Gamecock first baseman Christian Walker and closer Matt Price are members of the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds, a Baltimore Orioles affiliate.
The duo played in Greenville last weekend in a four-game series with the Drive at Fluor Field.
"It's great to be back in a stadium I played in during college. It's cool to see some familiar faces and Gamecock fans," said Walker.
"I have some friends coming to the games and we're counting on seeing a lot of Gamecock fans," said Price.
Walker and Price were drafted by the Orioles in the 2012 MLB Draft.
Walker was a 4th round selection and Price was a 7th.
"As soon as I found out that I was drafted by the Orioles, I texted him (Walker) and was like we're going to be roommates on the road," said Price.
Walker and Price are roommates on the road and back in Maryland, where they live with the same host family.
"It is great to have Price here with me. It has made the transition easier," said Walker.
Both players are doing well in the minors.
Walker is hitting .360 with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Price has a 1-0 record with four saves and a 3.72 ERA.
As they both try to move their way up in the organization, they've enjoyed watching former teammates like Jackie Bradley Jr. and Michael Roth make their major league debuts.
"I was Jackie's roommate for three years and when I found out I called him and we talked for about an hour. I was so happy for him. And then once Roth got called up I was like wow, this is crazy, but I'm so happy for him and I'm glad he is doing well," Price said.
"It's just exciting to see former teammates play in the majors. We've seen other Gamecocks make it there, but never anyone I've played with so it makes it more special. It has been a cool experience watching them," Walker said.
Both Price and Walker said they hope to get their shot in the majors soon.
"You can't think about it too much, or it will mess you up. You just have to go day by day and play your game, so that's what I do," said Price.
"Whenever they are ready to call me up I'll be ready, until then I just have to stay focused and do my best," said Walker.
