Numbers From Michigan
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- The Gamecocks defeated the Michigan Wolverines 33-28 in the Outback Bowl on New Years Day. The Gamecocks played two quarterbacks, Ace Sanders had a high flying day, Bruce Ellington only had two catches but they were as decisive as any catch in the game, and Jadeveon Clowney had a hit hear around the nation. Here are some of the numbers from the game.
Connor Shaw started the game but Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier was saying all week that the plan was to also play Dylan Thompson. Shaw started the game extremely well going 2 for 2 including a 56-yard touchdown pass to Damiere Byrd in the first series of the game. Shaw finished the game 18 of 26 for 224 yards and 2 touchdowns before leaving the final drive with an injury. Thompson came in through out the game, the first time in the second quarter. Thompson went 4 for 4 in his first drive throwing a touchdown to Ace Sanders. Thompson finished the game 7 of 10 for 117yards and 2 touchdowns. Shaw also added to the running game with 10 carries for 96 yards including a big 64 yard run in the third quarter.
Ace Sanders finished the game with 9 receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders also had a big 63 yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Sanders was named the MVP of the game for his performance.
Bruce Ellington only had 2 receptions but both were on Carolina's final drive of the game. The first started off the drive and the second was a 32-yard touchdown from Dylan Thompson to win the game.
In the fourth quarter of the game, the Gamecock defense held Michigan to a fourth down and the Wolverines sent in the punt unit. The play was a fake and the ball carrier was tackled right near the first down marker. The officials brought the chains onto the field and even though it seemed as if the ball was short by a link of two the officials awarded the first down, even after a review. The play that followed had people from all across the country talking about Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney got up the middle and made a vicious hit on the Michigan running back, forcing the fumble, and Clowney picked the ball up one handed to also recover the fumble for the Gamecocks.
