Future Gamecock Featured In All-American Game
CHICAGO (AP) -- Mercedes Russell had 16 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the West to a 92-64 win over the East in the girls McDonald's All-American game at the United Center Wednesday night.
The Tennessee signee was voted the game's MVP.
"I couldn't have done it without my teammates" said Russell, a 6-foot-5 forward. "We've been working really hard in practices, but I couldn't have done it without them."
The West jumped out to a 20-10 lead behind Tyler Scaife's seven points. Rebecca Greenwell extended the lead to 31-13 on a three-pointer. The Duke signee came up limping after being fouled on a layup attempt with 3:28 left in the half. She did not return and finished with eight points, going 2 for 3 from three-point range.
"It's painful, but it's not excruciating, it's nothing new, it's something I have dealt with this whole season," Greenwell said. "I think I am going to have an MRI soon. Before I even hurt it I had arthroscopic surgery scheduled for Tuesday because I had this ongoing knee problem all season."
Scaife, the player of the year from Arkansas, finished with 15 points and four assists.
Diamond DeShields had 15 points and Makayla Epps added 13 for the East. DeShields has signed to play at North Carolina and Epps is going to Kentucky.
North Carolina had the most All-Americans with three. DeShields played with Stephanie Mavunga and against future Tar Heel Jessica Washington.
"That was a good feeling. I am so proud of having a recruiting class of three McDonald's All-Americans," DeShields said. "To know that I will be going to the next level to play with those two girls is pretty exciting."
The East managed to get within 10 points at the end of the first half on a layup by Taya Reimer. Voted female player of the year, She is headed to Notre Dame.
Kaela Davis, the daughter of former NBA player Antonio Davis, led the East with 10 points in the first half, while DeShields, the daughter of former major leaguer Delino DeShields, added eight.
