Martin Selected: Assistant Coach USA Men's World Univ. Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 12, 2013) -- Davidson College head coach Bob McKillop has been selected as the head coach for the 2013 USA Basketball Men's World University Games Team, USA Basketball today announced. McKillop will be assisted on the sideline by collegiate head coaches John Beilein of the University of Michigan and Frank Martin of the University of South Carolina. The coaching staff was selected by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee and approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
"Representing our country is one of the most significant experiences for a coach or player," said McKillop, who on Monday night earned his seventh Southern Conference Tournament title. "I will treasure the opportunity. It's an honor to coach the USA Basketball World University Games Team."
"The 2013 USA World University Games Team will definitely benefit from the coaching of Bob McKillop, John Beilein and Frank Martin," said Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University head coach and chair of the USA Junior National Team Committee. "This staff will have the team well prepared for the challenges of competing against the best players in the world in that age group."
All three coaches own prior USA Basketball experience. McKillop was head coach of the 2008 USA U18 National Team that compiled a 4-1 record and earned the silver medal at the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at the 2003 Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament (U18), helping the USA to a 4-1 mark and a bronze medal. Beilein and Martin both served as court coaches during a USA Basketball training camp. Beilein was on hand to assist during the 2009 USA Men's U19 World Championship and USA World University Games training camp, while Martin was a court coach during the 2012 USA U18 National Team training camp.
Held every other year, the 2013 World University Games men's basketball competition is scheduled to be played July 7-16 in Kazan, Russia. Organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World University Games is a multi-sport competition open to men and women who are between the ages of 17 and 24 (born between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1995), and are or have been within the past year, a student at a college or university.
Training camp to select the 12-member team will be held June 24-July 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The final team selection will be determined prior to the team departing for Russia. The list of invitees will be announced later this spring.
