NCAA Ships USC Golf To Oregon

COLUMBIA, S.C. (USC SID) -- The 22nd-ranked South Carolina men’s golf team has been selected to play in the NCAA Eugene Regional in Eugene, Ore., on May 15-17, the NCAA announced Monday morning.

The Gamecocks earned the No. 4 seed and will compete against 12 teams at the par-70, 6,990-yard Eugene Country Club. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be held on May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

A total of 12 SEC teams received a bid to one of the six regionals. Tennessee will join South Carolina in Eugene as the No. 8 seed. Pac-12 champion Stanford is the top seed in the regional, followed by Houston, Oklahoma, the Gamecocks, Baylor, Big South champion Liberty, host Oregon, Tennessee, North Florida, East Tennessee State, Chattanooga, Missouri Valley champion Wichita State and Big Sky champion Northern Colorado.

The Gamecocks will head into the event coming off one of the most successful regular seasons in program history. South Carolina won three tournaments and finished in the top three in a school-record seven-straight events. The Gamecocks finished fifth at the SEC Championship last weekend with a total of 838 (-2), the lowest 54-hole SEC Championship total in school history.

South Carolina is making its 22nd NCAA Regional appearance and its 17th in the last 18 years. The Gamecocks will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championship for the second straight year after making the field last season with a tie for second finish at the NCAA Columbus Regional.

The Gamecocks, who have earned six regional berths under the guidance of head coach Bill McDonald, captured their only regional title in 2007, winning the West Regional on their way to finishing tied for 11th at the NCAA Championship.
