Newton Back At USC As Volunteer Assistant

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Steve Spurrier's first dual-threat quarterback is coming back to Gamecock football.

Tuesday, Syvelle Newton announced via Twitter he will join the Carolina coaching staff as a volunteer undergrad assistant. Newton is attending classes at USC trying to complete his degree.

Newton started at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and safety during his standout career at Carolina from 2003-06. He is one of just four players in major college football history to have more than 600 career yards passing, rushing and receiving.

Newton went undrafted in 2007. He played several years of Arena Football, his best coming in 2010 when he had 566 receiving yards and 12 touchdown catches for the Chicago Rush in just 5 games.
