COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina forward Carlton Geathers will miss at least six months after fracturing the knee cap in his right leg during a summer league game last week.

Geathers is a 6-foot-10 player from Georgetown who has played sparingly last season after sitting out his first year as a redshirt. Gamecocks coach Frank Martin said Monday that Geathers will need surgery and at least half a year to recuperate.

The school said Geathers was playing a summer pro-am league contest July 19 when he was hurt.

Geathers played in 28 games last winter, averaging a point and 1.5 rebounds in nearly 8 minutes of action per game.
