COLUMBIA (WOLO) -- USC head men's basketball coach Frank Martin will leave Columbia on Monday for a three week trip.

Martin will stay in Colorado Springs for a week and then travel to Kazan, Russia, as an assistant coach for Team USA in the World University Games.

He will work with Davidson coach Bob McKillop and Michigan coach John Beilein.

McKillop will serve as the head coach of Team USA, while Beilein will join Martin as an assistant.

The World University Games will be held July 7-16.

"I've never been away from my program or my family for this long, but I think it will be a great experience," said Martin.

27 players will compete in a training camp in Colorado Springs next week and the team will be trimmed down to 12 before it leaves for Russia.

Martin thinks the trip will be a great learning experience.

He will be coaching several college standouts, including Adreian Payne of Michigan State, Doug McDermott of Creighton, Luke Hancock of Louisville and P.J. Hairston of North Carolina.

“I'm so excited because the players that have been invited and accepted invitations are big time. Coaches learn from players so much,” Martin said.

The trip will cause Martin to miss the first week of summer recruiting.

However, Martin said he feels confident his staff will work hard in his absence.

“Having the comfort of our staff being in place allows me to do this because I won't be around for that first recruiting weekend in July which is no big deal,” Martin said. “If I was sitting at home watching TV then we don't deserve to sign anybody, but our staff will be out and beating up the road and we'll be over in Kazan and be back for that second weekend.”
