USC's Staley Starts New Shoe Charity

By Sara Jane Harris

COLUMBIA (WOLO) -- South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley has started a new non-profit organization called, "InnerSole."

The charity aims to provide new tennis shoes to children who are homeless and children who are in need.

Staley came up with the organization a month ago after she spoke with a friend who was cleaning out her closet.

Her friend had several unused pairs of sneakers and had no idea what to do with them.

"I just think we put our heads together and thought that someone could be of need of new sneakers," Staley said.

The sixth year head coach also drew inspiration from her passion for new shoes.

"I thought about growing up and also as an adult, anytime I put anything new on my feet, whether it's sneakers or new shoes, it really makes me feel good, gives me a different outlook and helps me walk with a pep in my step," she said.

Staley wanted to share that special feeling with others, especially children in need in The Midlands.

"Young kids who are unable to receive new sneakers or buy new shoes are being left out of that feeling," she said.

Staley has already received several donations.

She has reached out to several high-profile athletes and has received monetary donations from some friends in the WNBA.

The USC track team and volleyball team are also helping with contributions.

Staley said each day the organization gets bigger, thanks to the support of the Gamecock community and the generosity of others.

If you would like to help Staley with her organization, there will be an InnerSole sneaker drive next week in Columbia:
