COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Visitors to Congaree National Park are going to encounter a closed visitor center on Sundays and Mondays come this fall.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Friday (http://bit.ly/1cis6OM ) that Park Superintendent Tracy Stakely says the visitor center is being closed for two days because of federal budget cuts.
The park will remain open seven days a week. Signs and maps are being made available during the closures.
Stakely says the step begins in October. She says the reduction is designed to limit the impact on services while avoiding layoffs to the park's 20 full-time employees. Stakely says guided hikes once held on Sunday will likely move to Saturdays.
Friends of the Congaree Swamp President John Grego says closure on a high-visitation day like Sunday will be bewildering for visitors.
