MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) — Residents of Columbia may see South Carolina Air National Guard fighter jets escorting an aircraft over the Owens Field area. Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder of the South Carolina Air National Guard says Thursday's scheduled event is a routine exercise by the 169th Fighter Wing. The single aircraft is from the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol. Snyder says residents should know the mission is part of an exercise that helps pilots and crew maintain their skills. The unit from McEntire Joint National Guard Base in central South Carolina regularly takes part in such exercises as part of their national air defense mission. The unit part is part of a force that responds in a moment's notice to airborne threats over the United States.
